“I always check out the sale sections first – you never know what you are going to find :)”
The new school year is here. If your kids are like mine, they already have their own personal style. TJ Maxx and Marshall’s are helping out this year with back off price back to school finds.
Smart shoppers can head to Marshalls for teen trends in The Cube and thousands of footwear options for the entire family in the Shoe Mega Shop. At TJ Maxx, you’ll find looks that the kids want at 60% less than department and mall store prices.
I went to Marshalls to check out the deals. Evan is really into Fox brand. The tshirts were $6.99 vs. $25.99 at the mall. I am sold. Honestly, I would have never thought to check out TJ Maxx or Marshalls for stuff for him. They had a great selection and the prices were UNBEATABLE.
A quick tip on shopping at Marshalls and T.J.Maxx: It’s all about the thrill of the find. The stores receive more than 10,000 new items each week (in every store) so you never know when you’ll find that special something.
One FTM Reader will win a $50 Giftcard to TJ Maxx or Marshalls.

Stock up the year before for the next season. Kids really grown only one size (once over 2) over the year so shop those end of season clearance sales!
Melanie says
I shop at the end of the summer for a few new items to add to the summer clothes to start school. We wait until the weather starts to change to add long pants and shirts to their collection. Clothing tends to go on sale a month or so after school starts. Clearance racks have the first round of jeans etc at this time as the stores are stocking up for the holiday season. In addition, the kids tend to grow a bit each fall. Waiting to buy long pants until they have grown is easier and cheaper. We tend to buy staple items through out the year on clearance racks; socks, underwear, school supplies, etc. I really enjoy a good hunt at TJ Maxx for items. My teens enjoy name brands, but my check book does not. They often go shopping to find their own bargains. We get excellent deals on competition swimwear (Speedo, Nike & TYR), Under Armour socks, Nike shorts and sweats… The toy section offers awesome clearance prices on toys and books in the fall. TJ Maxx carries items (toys) you wouldn’t find at the regular department stores.

My BTS shopping tip: Before going to the store, take a look at the things you already have that may have been packed away! And keep in mind that one of the best ways to help someone else get ready for the new school year is packing up those clothes you won’t wear and sharing them with someone else :-).

we have an end of summer fashion show and go through all the drawers and the closet, trying everything on. We weed out clothes that are too small, stained, ripped or no longer “our” taste. Then we inventory what is left. That way when we go out shopping we know what we need.

Callie says
My tip for back to school is to shop your closet first. It is time consuming but by trying everything you already own first you’ll continue to sort and purge and you’ll know what you need. Plus you’ll remember clothes you’ve forgotten about and then you can shop for outfits that work with what you already have.
And as for who needs clothes for back to school—I do!

I have 3 boys to shop for & it seems like its constantly, they grow so fast & at the same time I think…LOL
Stefanie says
My back to school tip? Hit the stores early in the season. My children, William (4th grade) and Katie (3rd grade) both have birthdays at the end of the summer, so back to school shopping can be tough–especially when daycare is 200/week all summer, the school supply lists have gotten out of control and stores only stock uniform pieces during a small window of opportunity. The second the stores start putting the uniforms out in early August, I start snapping up uniforms piece by piece over the following weeks. It helps if you love to shop (and build a special savings over the year–back to school can be more expensive than Christmas)
Esther says
1.) My tip: I always hit thrift stores, garage sales, and get hand-me-downs in the summer before I buy new clothes in the fall. I do what I can to buy used clothes for my children and myself and then only spend a small amount in the fall. I help my children’s school by “recycling” my kids’ outgrown clothes; we give their outgrown clothes to students in grades lower than theirs. It’s all about recycling–I don’t worry when I buy new clothes because they are few and far between. I know the new clothes will help others down the line. I also don’t mind wearing something used myself–and I am a school assistant administrator. I know when I wear second hand clothes, that I am helping my family right now.
2.) My children and their friends will benefit from the gift card you are giving away.
Trung Nguyen says

Marie Gabler says
I always help get my god-daughters their school supplies and clothes.
Marie Gabler says
I learned this tip from my mom. I buy a years supply of school supplies (paper, pens, etc) during all the back to school sales. Better to pay 5 cents for a notebook now when its on sale then spend $1 later in the year.

Our last of 4 children is our daughter who is college junior.

TJMaxx has belped me build a great wardrobe. Shop for shoes and it’s like going to 20 different shoe stores all in one place. My best find was a $350.00 Ralph Lauren coat … for $29. Would love the opportunity to top that find again this year!
Denise Kasbohm says
Who needs School Clothes the most??? ME>>>:) I work as a teacher assistant and after buying my 5 kids school clothes(I do the cheapest I can) I NEVER buy me anything. Haven’t bought clothes in 4 years since I went back to work after my last Kindergarten-er. I sure can use it to buy some pants I don’t have to wear the same black pair everyday this year. LOL
Denise Kasbohm says
My tip: If you have 5 kids like I do DON’T take them all at the same time to buy back to school clothes!!! :o) I take the 3 teenagers one day and the 2 younger ones another day. That way they aren’t feeling like they have to wait forever to go to “their” store. Also, this way you have more of a guarantee to get most all of it done because you aren’t running back and forth to so many different stores.

LOVE LOVE LOVE TJMaxx and Marshalls! Who doesn’t?!
I grew up going to Goodwill and Salvation Army. I still enjoy that “thrill of the hunt” too, but EVERY ONCE in a while I look forward to brand name, brand-spanking new clothes from the TJX Companies!! I talk to the sales associates to find out when things will be marked down.
Now as for who needs new BTS clothes . . . which one of my 4 children? Actually, NONE of them need any more clothes! I’m the one tired of going to the bus stop in sweats and slippers. :o)
Dana Clayton says
I would shop for my 15 year old daughter. I have the hardest time finding jeans long enough to fit her – she’s 5’8” and 110 lbs. soaking wet.

I would love to win this contest – I always shop the clearance departments first and most often and never buy anything full price. If its not sale today – chances are it will be soon and that’s then I’ll make my purchase.
Annie says
Hmmm – I am probably going to take some continuing education classes this fall – so do I count for needing back to school clothes?

My back to school shopping tip is: to price compare before I shop…with school supplies I look to see what the Office Stores are doing. Normally higher priced, they have some crazy deals around back-to-school. For textbooks, I use amazon and half.com instead of my college bookstore and save hundreds.

Erin Walsh says
My back to school tip, especially for older kids is to set the amount that you’re going to spend ahead of time and make up a list of what that needs to cover.
And I always tell him that the less he spends of that money, the more he will have to keep for himself. That way he starts challenging himself to find bargains even if it means going to multiple stores. That way he is into it more and I know that I’m not going over my budget. It;s a win win.

My daughter had her first day of preschool today. My tip would be to get a few “fancier” outfits that your child loves and then supplement with cheaper mix & match separates. Stock up on the basics at a great price! We also get tons of hand-me-downs from a friend whose daughter is just slightly older. So, another tip would be to search out someone to give you their old stuff! :)

The best back to school shopping tip is to buy seasonal clothes a year ahead of time. For example, now is the time to buy summer clothing for next year in a few months you should start to buy fall/winter clothes for next year…after halloween, you should look for clearance costumes for the following year. Even if the kids do not end up wearing them, have a trunk of dress up clothes and let their imaginations do the rest!
Kaila says
Tip: buy throughout the year on clearance

I love the fall and back to school shopping- its fun to see what kind of bargains you can get. Mostly in the fall- I shop for next summer to be honest. I got a lot of things after Christmas for the kids “back to school” things. I buy their jeans- but mostly athletic pants for my kids after Christmas. I do some outlet shopping. I have 5 kids and the 3 in the middle are boys- SO the last boy gets alot of hand me downs… I would really love to go out and splurge on him just once. Thanks!

My back to school tip is one I came upon myself!! Try to get through at least the first month of school with clothes your kids already have. Last year after shopping for school clothes for my two sons three weeks before school started we found out that they grew so much in those three weeks none of their pants fit.
Now they just wear shorts for the first month and then we go buy just a few pair of jeans and sport pants and add to them as needed throughout the year!!

I am a huge Marshalls fan! Every year before school starts, I have my daughters go through their closets and drawers to see exactly what they need for back to school. I usually will buy them each one new outfit and new sneakers. We alway frequent Marshalls, as we never know what we will find. This year I was able to find a great steal, purple new balance sneakers for $14.99 for my purple loving daugher! I would use the gift card for myself as I just started my second career as a math teacher and start my first teaching job on 9/6. Focusing on my daughters, I did not buy any new back to school clothes for myself…
Katrina says
shop in advance and in the mornings when stores are less crowded

My tip- stock up on solid color bike shorts for girls going back to school. They can be worn under skirts or dresses so that the boys don’t snicker when they’re on the monkey bars, etc. Gymboree has them on sale for under $8 usually.
Angela says
Oops, I posted backwards. This is my 2nd comment for the drawing with my back to school tip. My favorite back to school tip is to have pencil/crayon boxes or supply bins for each child in a special area to do their homework. If you have shared supplies, it is still fun to have your own little pencil box with your pencil and crayons so you can learn to be an organized child.
Angela says
My sons would love this!! 1st and 2nd grade!

When it comes to back to school shopping I always start early. This year for instance I bought jeans for my 9 years old at Target 2 days after school ended and got them for $2.49 each. I also took my one daughter to Parisan which sounds pricy but I had a 20% any purchase coupon and my daughter picked clothes off the 70% or more off yellow dot rack. She got $500 in clothing for $38.75.
WINDI says
I ALWAYS SHOP SALES!
Judi Grein says
My daughter and I shop the resales stores in our area. We have found items with the original store tags still on the clothes. It takes more effort but walking out of the store with our bargains and not being broke is the payoff.
We also shop the discount stores like TJ Max and Marshalls because they have better deals than the mall.
I have a Freshman and a Senior in HS this year and they are always needing something.
Chrys says
My tip is know what we already have, and to have a list of what’s needed, instead of just being dragged in by all the sales.

Sounds like it would be a no brainer but I shop early and the clearance racks. I shop in Feb for some of those basic BTS items for my teen at TJ Maxx for the following fall. I always get his jeans there. More than half the costs from Dept stores all year round. Levis, Hurley, Polo and Puma! I even got Rebook EasyTones for less than $40 for myself… They are over $100 in some stores. All those school birthday party invites get a hit of TJ Maxx as well. I stock up on toys when out local TJ Maxx gets inventory. My 4 year old thinks the whole mall is called TJ Maxx since I always shop there. It is one of the new anchor stores at our mall and I have been a loyal customer ever since they opened. Ask the employees when they get deliveries. I check in the next day to see what is new. Best way to get clothes and gifts before they disappear.
Both my boys take a big chunk of my extra cash for BTS. I will have to say my 14 yr. old and 4 yr. old are the ones I shop for the most. I get a great deal on great brands. It definitely stretches my dollar.

All 3 of my children (2girls &1boy) need BTS clothes. I generally buy them one or two outfits to start. Then by the end of September the crazy back to school rush is over and we buy some fall/winter clothing. Our weather is still on the warm side so they are still wearing tshirts & shorts. I also ALWAYS try to use a coupon when shopping for BTS items. Things add up really fast with 3 kids so I try to save so we can get more for our money!

This year my number one BTS shopping tip has been to not leave the house without checking for printable retail coupons on the web, then doing multiple transactions to maximize coupon use. TJ Maxx is my store of choice because I will always get excellent value and savings there, no coupon needed. (:

Absolutely watch for the best prices on the best brands – TJ Maxx and Marshall’s are first stops. Rarely leave disappointed. My favorite lunch break is the nearby Marshalls.
Two wonderful grandchildren are hitting amazing growth spurts and are in that preteen/tween time when brands mean so much. It would be fantastic to help their mom out with a much needed boost to their bts needs

Martine says
My back to school shopping is tell your kids how much you are willing to spend on them each year so they have an idea what their limit is. I need back to school clothes for me! I did all the kids shopping already and have not bought anything for myself for Fall.
Raina says
My daughter went to first grade this year, and we could use a new coat for her.
Raina says
My tip for back-to-school shopping is don’t do it! Shop for clothes year-round as they go on sale and as you see them at yard sales. This is a much more economical shopping method as you can drop a fortune all at once doing the BTS shopping right before school because your child will want everything! If your child sees a piece they want throughout the year, and it’s on sale, go ahead and buy it. This ensures that they don’t grow out of all their clothes at the same time. Wait for the seasonal clearance to stock up on next year’s school essentials (and those you just have to have for this year!)
Stacey says
Both of my kids need back to school clothes. They are both “poor” college girls and always needing new stuff!

I’ve found some terrific shoes at both TJ Maxx and Marshall’s, great prices. I try to take the kids shopping separately so I can focus on each one’s separate needs. Plus they get a little one on one time. We always find some special items to make going back to school fun.
Monica says

One thing that I do to help my 7 year old son, and 10 yr old daughte, get back into the routine is set up a schedule, similiar to a responsibility and reward chart. I give them kudos in getting back into the routine of waking up earlier and getting breakfast and getting dressed faster in the mornings. I also throw in there kudos for getting homework done in a timely manner.
Briana Olson says

Back to school shopping trip… while supplies are on sale early in the year, I always buy extra to “refresh” my kids supplies mid-year. I store the extras in the closet and then after Christmas break, I pull them out and re-pack their backpacks so that they’ll have plenty to last through the rest of the year.
Ada Miller says
My back to school tip is to try to start ahead of the time things are needed so you can only buy during sales instead of having to pay full price.
