Have you been out to the new

?

Two things to note -- they consider Winn Dixie as their only competitor at that location and they double manufacturer coupons up to 50 cents everyday.

A number of Bargain Mom readers were waiting on the doors to open this morning and they were rewarded for their efforts with a free bag of groceries.

Here's a picture of what they got:

Thanks to

for the photo.

is one of the best places in Alabama to really score some great deals free, cheap and super cheap items each week.

But I get this comment from

SABANTHEMAN

on a regular basis:

"Stay away from Publix. their prices are to high"

He does have a point.

The store is very high.  Very high compared to

Walmart

, Aldi, Save-A-Lot.

However Publix has something on the other stores that makes them a mecca for couponers across the south - a generous coupon policy.

Go

It's the most conducive to really saving money with coupons.

One statement I hear from Publix shoppers who do not use coupons,  "I don't mind paying more just for the customer service."

What??   You want to spend more money on customer service just because you think the other stores are rude?

While Publix customer service is beyond stellar, and the other stores may have rude employees, I don't like to pay extra for products I can get cheaper somewhere else even though the person doesn't smile at me or offer to push my buggy to the car.

The reason I shop at Publix?  Because I understand the coupon system and it works far better than spending $200 a week on groceries at a big box store without coupons.

So here are some tips to help you understand shopping at Publix:

1.  They double coupons up to 50 cents everyday, all day.

Manufacturer coupons only.  They

do not double store coupons

or store coupons from competitors. (Excludes coastal Georgia, Florida)

2.

Generous coupon booklets, printable coupons and in-ad coupons

-- They offer copious amounts of coupons found in Publix stores, at customer service, in the paper, online and via Pet Club, Baby Clubs, Preschool Clubs and Family Magazines. Y

3.

You can use competitor coupons --

They allow you to use competitor coupons from stores noted

This includes money off coupons, catalinas, in ad coupons, store coupon printables.

4.

Yellow Advantage and Green Advantage ads feature coupons and special savings for a 3 to 4 week period.

You will need the ads for the coupons.  The Yellow Ad is usually included in the Sunday paper the day after the sale starts.  That's only if your zip code is selected by Publix for distribution.  You can get extras at customer service within reason.

5.  Publix Promise --

If the price of the item rings up higher than an advertised price from their ad or their shelf tag, you get that one item free.

6.  No coupon limits --

After $50 of coupon deductions for your trip, they will call a manager over to override the computer.

7.  Stacking --

They do allow you to stack coupons, meaning you can use one store coupon and one manufacturer coupon per item.  You can also stack other coupons as well.  For instance if you have a Buy One Get One Free coupon for a certain product and you also have a coupon for the item you have to buy to the get the second item free, you can use a cents off coupon on the one you are purchasing, not on the free item.

8.  Penny item --

The Penny item happens every Wednesday.  The coupon is required and will appear in the A section of your local Wednesday paper.    Your total, pre-coupons, must be at least $10.  Use the penny coupon first, then your other coupons.

9.  Buy one get one free specials are your friend --

1.  You don't have to buy both items.  You can buy 1 of the BOGO items and pay only half price.  (Unlike Winn Dixie where you'll need to buy both)

2.  You can also use coupons on each of the buy one get one free products.  (This is because the item is not free, it's actually half price)

The really awesome way to work a BOGO free sale is to have 2 store coupons and 2 Manufacturer coupons to use on 1 BOGO deal.

This principle also applies to their 10 for $10 sales.  You can buy 1 for $1 and use a coupon on each of the sale items.  So if you have 5 coupons buy 5 items for $5.

10.  Rain checks --

If the deal you're looking for is gone make sure you get a rain check at customer service. Normally they do not expire but recently a few Publix have started putting a 30 day expiration date on them.  Either way it's a great way to make a sale on your own time. Go

e about rain checks.

STORE ORIENTATION:

1. Look at the front kiosk for a store map and aisle list.  This is helpful for having your clipped coupons in the right order before you hit the store.

2.  Free cookies for your children in the bakery.

3.  Free coloring books and colors for your children at check out.

4. They do not accept tips for grocery bagging and unloading at your car.

5.  Ask customer service for special coupons or rebate forms they haven't put out on the floor yet.

6.  Clearance prices, marked by red stickers, aren't great. Wait for really low prices.

7.  Publix does not accept expired manufacturer coupons.  They do make a one week exception for their store coupons with approval.
