announced price changes and plan changes today.  For new members the changes take affect immediately.  For current members, the changes will start Sept. 1.

So for instance, our current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month

Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming), for $7.99 a month.

The price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). For new members, these changes are effective immediately; for existing members, the new pricing will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

HERE'S AN EXPLANAITION

:

Netflix users who use the service to watch DVDs and stream video will pay an extra $72 per year starting in September, according to an

on the company’s blog today.

That additional $6 per month stems from the site’s new policy to

into two separate plans. Instead of $9.99 for both unlimited streaming and unlimited one-at-a-time DVD rentals, subscribers will pay $7.99 per month for the DVD portion (more if they want to have multiple DVDs out at one time) and another $7.99 for the streaming.

Even people who don’t watch streaming video and DVDs could end up paying that higher rate — Netflix has yet to email subscribers about the change, and the new plans kick in September 1. Consumers who don’t change their account to eliminate one component will end up paying for both plans.
