I just wrote a post on understanding Buy One, Get One Free coupons last week. In that post, I mentioned that it was important to know your stores policy. It looks like Target has updated their policy in regards to BOGO coupons.
Buy One Get One Free Coupons (BOGO):
BOGO coupons cannot be combined (i.e. you cannot use two BOGO coupons on two items and get both for free). Unless stated otherwise on the coupon, the use of one Buy One Get One Free coupon requires that two of the valid items are presented at checkout of which one item will be charged to the guest and the 2nd item will be discounted by its full retail price.
Note: I think we all knew this already. There is no store that accepts two BOGO coupons without a purchase.
A second cents-off coupon of the same type cannot be redeemed towards the purchase price of the first item.
This means you cannot use a $1.00/1 with a BOGO coupon, however:
- If a Target BOGO coupon is used, one additional manufacturer coupon maybe used on the first item.
- If a Manufacturer BOGO coupon is used, one additional Target coupon may be used on the first item.
This policy does not specifically address a Buy One, Get One Free coupon with a Buy One, Get One Free Sale – so we shall see how that shakes out.
I think we will be seeing many policy changes in the upcoming months due to all the publicity of Extreme Couponing.

What is wrong with people, i was a cashier for many years, why do cashiers act like your opening up their wallet and taking their money, just scan the coupons! I’m sick of cashiers ALWAYS TRYING to find a problem with your coupons! I go 2 self checkouts as much as possible, no harassment. NO cashiers are not threatened with your job if you use 2 many coupons some cashiers just like to give people a hard way to go. Annapolis/Baltimore MD.

If people would quit trying to cheat the system this wouldn’t be a problem. I work at a grocery store and see it every single day. I do my part correctly as the cashier, and customers often times try to bully me to give them their way. It goes both ways with this, believe me. I am hassled daily about our coupon policy and what they say I should take from them. I do not make the rules, so they shouldn’t get mad at me when they don’t follow them.

Target is already a challenge for me. I find I have to watch the clerk scan each coupon to make sure I even get the correct amount off–let alone try a BOGO deal there. I’ve also noticed lately that the gift cards will not issue on some of their sales at the register, even with the signage clearly marked by the product. Some price cuts don’t come through either. Very frustrating. I find I shop there less because of this added hassle.

Yep, we’re seeing stores changing policies right now. I just learned of Schnucks new policy today – a limit of 15 coupons doubled per customer per day in Columbia MO. I totally undestand Schnucks point. It’s too bad it’s gotten to this point. Extreme couponing=Extreme coupon policy changes.

I have previously tried to use a BOGO manufactur coupon with a Target BOGO sale and they would not allow it This particular sale was that you got a free jar of Salsa with purchase of 2 Tostitos chips. I had a manufacturer’s coupon to get free salsa as well and they would not allow its use.
J says
Bethany,
Can you clarify…were you trying to get two free salsas with the purchase of only 2 chips or an additional discount on the already free salsa?

Can anyone let me know the stores that do this still? Rite Aide and now Target doesn’t. I have a Food Lion, Harris Teeter, BiLo, Walgreens, and CVS near me. Thanks, Ashleigh H.

Our Target registers used to price each item at half for a BOGO if you checked your receipts, if you used a BOGO q you still paid half price for one of them resulting in a 75% savings. However, I’ve noticed that the receipts now group items and provide a group price and group discount, so maybe that partly spawned the need to clarify the policy???

So, does this mean that you cannot use a BOGO mfr coupon with a BOGO Target coupon? If I recall, I did a Resees’ candy bar deal a few months ago where I got 8 Resees bars for free because I used 4 BOGO mfr coupons and 4 BOGO Target coupons…
Shannon says
Yep I would say thats exactly what it means.

I really wish they would stop show the show Extreme couponing. From the couple shows I actually watched the stores they showed broke their own couponing rules. To me they are really going to ruin couponing for everyone else.
Melissa McK says
Exactly! This is why I think this show is a disaster! Well that and several other reasons. The people on this show are allowed to “break” several coupon policies simply because they are buying insane amounts of junk and to be on TV?? Crazy. Worst part is that one store who broke their rules for that lady who used coupons fraudulently. Now they blame us. How about your cashiers pay attention?? Or she buys in reasonable limits? Call ahead, fine, but she made her transaction confusing so they wouldn’t notice.

At CVS and Walgreens you can still use TWO BOGO Coupons and get both items for free. Rite Aid just stopped theres but you used to be able to there also. So there are stores that you can do this at to get both items free with there BOGO sale and a BOGO coupon.
Dee says
That’s incorrect. You can use a BOGO coupon on a BOGO sale in CVS and WAGS but RA changed and no longer allows it.
You have never been able to use two MQ BOGO on two items and get them both free. To use two BOGO MQ you would need 4 of the item.
Shannon says
Tina,
I think you are confused, a BOGO coupon with a BOGO sale.. not two BOGO coupons.
