We will probably be renting a car for our vacation this year. So, instead of trying to cram my hubby, my grandson, myself and all of our travel things into my little Toyota Camry Solara (read that convertible with very little trunk space), I’m looking for a mid-sized SUV to rent for a couple of weeks. We had two options: wait a day to leave Florida or rent a car once we got to Philly and drive to our parked car at the Harrisburg airport. As much as we would have loved an extra day in Florida, it wasn’t an option, so we rented a car. The money hit our account in April.

If You’re a Beginner, Consider Renting or Borrowing Gear. Renting your gear can be a more affordable way to try skiing without a long-term commitment. There may be ski hills within driving distance, which can save you the money you would have otherwise spent on flights and a rental car. Gear is pricey.

My sister-in-law and her husband had one that they used and rented out and indicated that it was doing well. Unfortunately, I was over optimistic about how many days per year the condo would rent. I was counting on an average of 4 months rentals. For the first few years, I used the on site manager to run the property rentals.

Use discounts on rental cars. We rented an SUV for our last vacation because our car is getting very old and the route was fairly desolate. We pack these in a suitcase, so no one knows the difference. (We We drive everywhere, so I am not sure how this strategy would work for air travel.).

Another cost to factor into flying is whether or not you’ll need a rental car when you arrive at your destination. Having our own car means we don’t have to rent one and we can bring a LOT from home. For example, when renting cabins, we spend most of the time there and cook most of our meals.

I bought these after our bags got stolen from the trunk of our rental car in San Francisco when we were, literally, 50 feet away having tea. Now, I use these for my laptop, headphones, car keys, etc. Here are some of my fave items: Magnetic car phone holder is a must for road trips or when renting a car.
