I have rounded up some things we can do in our homes to prevent food waste:
I keep a running list of meals and their ingredients that everyone at home enjoys, that way I always know what to shop for.
Before going grocery shopping always look in your refrigerator, freezer, and pantry first to avoid buying food you already have. If you find something that needs to be used up immediately then make sure you plan upcoming meals around it.
Meal plan for the week before you go shopping so that you would only buy things that are needed for those meals and those which are not available at home. If you find meal prep overwhelming, then you can get all the help you need HERE.
If you eat out often, then do take into consideration the fact as to whether or not you will eat leftovers for any of your meals.
If you have a meal plan, then you already know how many meals you will be making with each item, so always try to include quantities in your shopping list.
Buy in large quantities (e.g., buy one, get one free deals) only if you are sure you will be able to use all the food before it gets spoiled.
If pre-determined packaging is not what you require for your household, then try buying food from bulk bins as then you can buy just the required quantity.
Store food properly in airtight, labeled containers when buying food in bulk. You can learn how to keep food fresh longer with storage tips from HERE
You can find imperfect produce at discount prices, these items may have physical imperfections but there are just as safe and nutritious.
The refrigerator door being the warmest part of the fridge, is not the right place to store eggs. Know more about how to store food properly in your refrigerator HERE.
