In June 2003 the European Commission adopted a Communication on an integrated product policy (IPP) aiming to reduce the environmental impacts of products, where possible by using a market-driven approach that combines competitiveness with social concerns. Together they account for 70 to 80 per cent of the whole life cycle impact of products.
