At 8:15 this morning, my youngest daughter climbed on the bus for her first day of first grade. Since the fall of 2005, I have primarily been a stay at home mother to our two daughters. I’m excited for all of the possibilities that lie ahead for my daughters…and for me too. It’s been a long time coming.

We toured Monticello in 2005 and learned that Thomas Jefferson, one of my favorite presidents died a pauper. Even so his surviving daughter had to live off charity. We toured Gettysburg in 2005 as well and watched a re-enactment of the 4 day battle starting July 1 and ending July 4, where more than 51,000 soldiers from both sides died.

This photo was taken the morning after the home birth of our oldest daughter. Our daughter was born at 6 pm on a fall day in 2005. What I never expected or intended was that I would be 36 when I would become a mother. Yes, you read that right–a home birth, but that story is for another time.

My daughter has officially allowed Christmas music to be played in the house, since it is post Thanksgiving. My poor, sad daughter lost her first furry baby this weekend; her beloved Beebert. This was right after they got married in 2005. My daughter is inconsolable, Beeb was her pet. by Pennie So sorry to hear this.

Once I became pregnant with our first daughter in 2005, at the ripe old age of 35, I stopped running completely and took up walking. In my early 30's, I competed in several sprint triathlons. I found over the years that if I didn't have an event to work towards, I could easily talk myself out of exercise.

So when our oldest daughter was born 7 years ago, we were over-joyed.and maybe a bit overwhelmed. Right after our daughter was born, I read an article in the newspaper that tugged at my heart and my postpartum hormones. That first year, the family was a single mother whose infant son was born just a few days before our daughter.

He is married to author Kate Washington, and they have two daughters: Nora (17) and Lucy (13). He taught British and Postcolonial Literature, as well as Creative Writing, at Sacramento State University until his retirement in 2016. His poetry, fiction and scholarly articles have appeared in nearly 200 journals.
