Our first storm: 2007. The year 2007 held such promise for us when it started, but by the end of the year, we were brought to our knees. As self-employed small business owners, we have lived through some tough months, but in 2007, it was a tough year. For a variety of reasons, our business slowed down in 2007.

Even though we bought a house in 2007, I never once expected it to be a money-maker. We have to pay for maintenance and property taxes and the interest on the loan. When they got married, they bought a duplex so that the rent money from the tenant in the upstairs apartment would pay the mortgage. In 2007, when the kids were 8 and 13, we recreated that trip – with a travel trailer and bunks instead of a miniscule tent. Alan and I, by choice, bought land in an area with low property taxes.
