Back in my teens and early twenties, Mom used to yell at me about not carrying enough cash. Either I would be walking or using my last quarter in the pay phone to call home and beg someone to come get me. As an adult, I use both cash and credit as well as checks. If I buy anything online, I use credit.

Use Up Existing Resources. Since she could no longer afford to pay it, she stopped the home insurance and stopped using the cars she inherited (also free and clear). She is on the low income payment plan for electricity and uses her Social Security check to pay that and the water bill. Only take what you will actually use now.
