In 2008-2009 when we had the credit crunch and recession, there was at least one day when stores were not accepting credit. We took a day trip to a small town in our area several years ago with our grown son and daughter-in-law. Gas stations, some hotels, some restaurants are examples of places you might negotiate a cash discount.

In 2002, Michael Smolyansky’s children took the helm of Lifeway Foods, with daughter Julie assuming the roles of President and CEO, and son Edward becoming Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer. And there’s a new generation running the company, too. Julie and Ed commemorated Lifeway’s 25th Anniversary in 2011 by ringing the NASDAQ bell.

We bought our house as a short sale in 2008. My son has a job at a local pizza place and he gets a free meal after every shift. My younger son and I have been volunteering there lately and the need seems to be growing more and more. The plan is for us to both retire around age 58 and move back to the small town where I grew up.

That first year, the family was a single mother whose infant son was born just a few days before our daughter. Her mom was going to help her prepare the dinner and celebrate her son's first Christmas with her. In 2008, when our youngest was born, we started adopting a senior too. I'm so glad that we did.
