Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. I love a bargain.

Things mattered to them, even something as small as Christmas wrapping was considered precious. My Aunt, God rest her soul, saved Christmas paper and those silly little paper bows from year to year. Use those as well. Christmas cards are becoming a forgotten tradition, but we still get and give some. Make gift tags.

Sometimes, as we shop we see things we would like to own and decide to treat ourselves with a gift or two as well. So, hey, I guess I can take the tax reduction next year as well as this! All things Christmas. I always shop for Christmas wrapping paper, gift tags, boxes and really nice ornaments the week after Christmas.

I also occasionally get to encourage young entrepreneurs by purchasing their wares (usually soda or lemonade but sometimes more ambitions products as well). Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars). Do You Save Wrapping?

Just bare twigs in a large vase, with old ornaments tied to them can be pretty as well. We live on the edge of the prairie and prairie grasses grow well here. They kind of look like the ones for sale at Curious Country Creations. Plan ahead and hit garage sales, but especially estate sales.

Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales. The article specifies that Garlick did not buy any birthday or Christmas presents for her children, but I’m sure that they got items from well-meaning relatives. Go Frugal Go Green'
