Years ago, we rented a unit in one of two quadruplex buildings owned by our landlord. To save some money, we asked the landlord if we could start a vegetable garden in the area outside our unit. The landlord also let me pick some of the seeded concord grapes growing up the hill. Here’s how we saved money on rent.

None of these services depend on landlord participation. When the time comes to apply for a mortgage, stable employment for at least two years – in addition to a good score and a clean credit history – is required by most lenders. Also, your credit report cannot explain to a reviewer that you had extenuating circumstances.
