My composting adventures all started about 9 years ago when our local Penn State Cooperative Extension office offered a free composting bin (the round one in the picture) when you attended their free composting seminar. I have a system going, but I am a laid back composter. So what did I learn at the seminar?

Basically there are two reasons to compost. The second is supplementary to the first–you use the compost as fertilizer. Although there are numerous aids available to assist you in composting, it all comes down to the fundamentals; make a pile of biodegradable matter and wait until it breaks down. No Need to Get Fancy.

According to most sources, such as Enviro News and Business there is no good way to re-cycle artificial trees (sounds like a business opportunity!). Obviously trees can be composted and used in other re-cycle situations, so they don’t sit in land fills for years as artificial.

Can’t believe I live here – a lake near my house Because I’ve lived so many different places, I’ve seen first-hand how good use of available resources can really improve overall community experiences, such as community gardens that utilize city-wide composting programs, to libraries, cycling infrastructure.

Some people suggest putting the mold on top of your washing machine as it goes through a couple of cycles, but I wouldn’t want the cement in the house – in case of spills (especially when working with kids on the project!). Tap all sides of your mold to try to get any bubbles out of your mix. Now you wait. Driving across.

Slowly I transitioned to composting my kitchen scraps, again limiting the number of items that ended up in our city’s landfill. My goal this year is to increase my cycling; I know I can do better and can ride farther so I’ve made a goal to cycle 1,000 miles this year.
