My composting adventures all started about 9 years ago when our local Penn State Cooperative Extension office offered a free composting bin (the round one in the picture) when you attended their free composting seminar. I have a system going, but I am a laid back composter. So what did I learn at the seminar?

Coined in 1973 by Liz Christy and her Green Guerrilla group in New York City, guerrilla gardening uses “seed grenades” as a way of introducing vegetation to empty lots in NYC in order to make the city look better. Sure, people do actually plant some of them, but I think throwing them is much more fun. Plan a mission.

We planted the new plants that were growing in the repurposed egg carton that I constructed 2 weeks ago. Decide on the size of your garden bed, what you want to go, and find out how much room each plant needs because they will expand and can take over nearby plants (like my “ killer cucumbers ” from my first garden experience).

It’s helpful to have information about the varieties of each plant on your list that will grow well in your area. Some offer resources such as seeds, plants and compost in return for your willingness to share what you grow with friends, neighbors or the local soup kitchen. For example, in my area we plant tomatoes mid-March.
