Avoiding Food Waste, in pictures (naturally)
I show you my food waste or lack thereof on a weekly basis, yes, but I don’t spend a whole lot of time talking about how I avoid food waste. In fact, I often think that the actual using up of food isn’t the hard part…most often the difficult part is simply managing to notice what needs to be used up. So, regular fridge inspections have become an important tool Because I cannot stand to blog without pictures.
So, every now and then I like to show you what I’ve been doing to use up odds and ends from my fridge. (hmm…upon

Food Waste Friday | This is a first!
Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. started doing this in March of 2008 to help motivate myself to use up my food instead of wasting it and it’s been very effective. Since it helped me so much, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
(note: I note: if seeing mold grosses you out, you’ll want to skip this week’s Food Waste Friday post!)

How To Use Up Cilantro
Those of you who are regulars around here know that cilantro has been my nemesis in my battle against food waste. I’m happy to report that though I do still waste some every now and then, I’ve gotten much better at using it up.
course, cilantro is hardly the most dreadful food to waste…it’s small, compostable, and cheap, so wasting it is not as worrisome as wasting a cut of beef. It’s tough to use up an entire bunch before it gets wilty or slimy. Apparently I’m not the lone cilantro-waster out there,

Food Waste Friday
Since I have a very un-fancy composting system, I’ll have to throw this away instead of composting it. If you blogged about your food waste, link us up to your post using the Mister Linky widget below. If you participate, you’ll get a spot on my food waste blogroll for a week, so come join us!
...Tags: Two little pieces of leftover grilled chicken are in my photo this week. I’m more iffy about eating meat that’s been around for a while than I am about veggies and dairy, so even though this might be safe to eat,

Local, Organic Buying vs. Frugality
Ideologically, I am 100% on board with the idea of buying local, organic food. Unfortunately, local, organic food is not always so good for the grocery budget.
Line-drying laundry, buying less stuff, driving less, eating less processed food, and buying used are all things that satisfy both my desire to save money and my desire to save the earth.
This topic has come up several times recently in the comments, and so I thought perhaps devoting a post to it would be a good idea.
I think it’s a wonderful thing for both people and the planet.

Food Waste Friday
Unfortunately, this has to go in the trash instead of the compost, so it truly is waste.

Food Waste Friday-June 19th
The bad news is that there are three things in my food waste photo this week. The good news is that everything is compostable.
don’t think I’ve ever wasted spinach before, but I guess there’s a first for everything. Not wasting food is an exhausting job, I’ve decided. I I did pick out a bunch of spinach leaves that were still good, but these ones were just too far gone.

Food Waste Friday-Oh, the shame!
The watermelon and the apple can at least go into the compost, but I’m bummed about the roast beef. I’d rather waste a few slices of meat than get sick.
On a food-waste related note, check out what’s going on in Scotland. They have an official Love Food, I had a less-than-fabulous week, as you can see. It’s from Aldi, and I really, really like it.
