Recycling the school’s waste can include establishing composting systems and worm farms to use as fertilizers for the garden. When a school adopts a whole-school approach to working towards being a sustainable school , the students learn many life lessons that may have been missed in traditional education.

For example, most leftover food scraps can even be composted ( other than meat, of course ) so they can be brought home if a school or workplace doesn’t do composting. Everything in that lunch bag can be washed and reused or at least an be dealt with in an environmentally-friendly manner.

I save money where I can, reusing old food containers for my multitude of seasonal seedlings, getting free five-gallon buckets from the bakery to use for extra growing space, making compost from our fruit and vegetable scraps, and starting almost everything from seed. I live in a fairly transient town with lots of college students.

There weren't a lot of people walking around, mostly hippies and college students. From composting and saving rain water to using cloth napkins and reusable grocery bags, I have made many changes in my life over the last 20 years. It was in downtown Pittsburgh at a park where the three rivers meet, if I remember correctly.

Can’t believe I live here – a lake near my house Because I’ve lived so many different places, I’ve seen first-hand how good use of available resources can really improve overall community experiences, such as community gardens that utilize city-wide composting programs, to libraries, cycling infrastructure.
