In January, I only ventured into Target because our daughters wanted to go and spend some of their Christmas gift money. At the beginning of the month, we were in the market for a bedroom dresser because my youngest daughter’s dresser fell apart over the holidays. Daughter and mommy were both thrilled.

In 2015, the monthly challenge will be Choose Thrift First. While I love thrift stores, I can be easily swayed to run into Target or Kohl’s when I’m in that part of town. Our youngest daughter’s dresser practically disintegrated into pieces over the holiday break. The Choose Thrift First Challenge.

The challenge on the blog this year is to Choose Thrift First , where we’re rethinking our purchases to find more cost effective solutions. And the first item on the list was a new dresser for our younger daughter. So for the first time I checked out Craigslist. Too many stories of Craigslist gone wrong.

In April, we saved quite a bit of money by comparison shopping, and choosing thrift first. Upon more online research, my husband felt the new repair would be beyond his ability, so we started looking on Craigslist. April’s Thrift Store Finds. My next stop was my favorite thrift store, Community Aid. Savings: $20.

I’m always amazed by the amount store tags I see on clothing and household item at thrift stores. If you have some bigger items, you will likely make more money selling them on Craigslist or your local Facebook sale page than at a yard sale. Instead of letting stuff languish unused and eventually given away, return it!
