At the beginning of the month, we were in the market for a bedroom dresser because my youngest daughter’s dresser fell apart over the holidays. After shopping locally at some furniture stores, I resorted to Craigslist and spent hundreds less on a new-to-her dresser. Can I find what I need at a second hand or thrift store?

In 2015, the monthly challenge will be Choose Thrift First. While I love thrift stores, I can be easily swayed to run into Target or Kohl’s when I’m in that part of town. Our youngest daughter’s dresser practically disintegrated into pieces over the holiday break. The Choose Thrift First Challenge.

The challenge on the blog this year is to Choose Thrift First , where we’re rethinking our purchases to find more cost effective solutions. Two drawers of her dresser pretty much disintegrated over the holidays and the poor girl was living out of plastic tubs until we found a replacement. At $500-700–we’ll pass.

Back in 2013, I had a year-long series, Christmas Savings Club , to encourage everyone to set aside money each month for the holidays. I had no emotional attachment to any of it and I was happy to make that money right before the holidays. But that store credit is much better than sending it to the thrift store as a donation.

I’m always amazed by the amount store tags I see on clothing and household item at thrift stores. If you have some bigger items, you will likely make more money selling them on Craigslist or your local Facebook sale page than at a yard sale. I have a friend who sells cookies and candy during the Christmas and Easter holidays.
