The challenge on the blog this year is to Choose Thrift First , where we’re rethinking our purchases to find more cost effective solutions. And the first item on the list was a new dresser for our younger daughter. I checked some local furniture stores to check the prices of new dressers. He has no qualms about much.

I stopped by my two favorite thrift stores last week: Salvation Army & Community Aid, a local store. I only go on Wednesdays, because both stores offer an additional 50% off on almost everything. Finally, spring has arrived in central PA, so I carved out some time last Wednesday to hit the thrift stores.

We do put up decorations (ones I buy at garage sales or thrift stores and reuse each year). Mom’s black cape, some makeup and a piece of cardboard cut and painted black to make bats ears can make someone into Dracula. My daughter-in-law came up with this idea, buying bulk pumpkins and bulk flowers.

So how does a Spartan mom dress her family these days? About five years ago, I started thrifting. But as my daughter grew, I noted how many nice things I was giving away. Would the store be yucky? The next time I’m at a thrift store, then I know to focus my attention there. I worried, though.
