I have used the extra money to pay off debt, fund family trips, or build up our Christmas savings. This past winter I cleaned out closets and drawers in my quest to minimize and downsize our stuff and donated everything to the thrift store, rather than hold on to it for the spring sale. It wasn’t worth my time.

Being self-employed, we have a higher starter fund on hand and when we pay off our non-mortgage debt, we will save to at least 6 months expenses and maybe even more. I found this post very helpful.
