Kids could roam the neighborhood by themselves safely. On Christmas eve, gangs of kids caroled from house to house. Kids addressed adult neighbors as Mr or Mrs so and so, not by first name. Christmas was a one week event – between Dec 25 and Jan. Kids walked to school. Our home was heated with a coal stove.
