While we were still renting an apartment, I researched areas with lower property taxes, scouted out my ideal neighborhoods, and waited for a smaller, less expensive house to come on the market. Paper is one of my favorite simple, yet frugal sources of entertainment! Childhood joy. I think my answer to this is covered in #10.

We paid an excavator (to dig the hole for the foundation), a well driller and a cabinet maker (for our kitchen and bathroom cabinets). Alan and I, by choice, bought land in an area with low property taxes. Had we not fallen in love with the locale, it wouldn’t have mattered how low the taxes were, but fall in love we did.

I remember one morning my husband and I were sitting at the kitchen table contemplating if we should sell one of our cars. Also to top it off, I had a huge property tax due that month for our office building that was going to be difficult to pay for in light of the circumstances. It was a scary time for us.
