People opened their windows and used attic fans or sat in metal lawn chairs outside to cool off. Christmas gifts were precious, opened one at a time taking turns, and then examined by everyone present before the next guy got to open theirs. Gasoline stations did not serve food, have coffee or provide bath rooms. Food/shopping.
