People opened their windows and used attic fans or sat in metal lawn chairs outside to cool off. Christmas gifts were precious, opened one at a time taking turns, and then examined by everyone present before the next guy got to open theirs. Most of us did not have air conditioned homes. Some of us did not have central heat.
