I work full time in IT and my wife works part time in retail. After trying to extend credit to finance the vacation and we were denied (best thing to ever happen to us) we realized we made too much money to be living like this and something had to change. If married, who initiated the debt free goal? We live in New York.

Our mom stayed home to raise us kids; she went to work part-time in the local school system after both my brother and I were in school. He diligently maintained our car and our house, doing all the work himself. We knew it would be a balancing act, so we were working on saving money long before the wedding.

Boring I know, but I’m a home body so it works for me. Besides writing on my personal finance blog, A Debt Free Stress Free Life, I’m an adjunct professor at a local college and own a residential and commercial cleaning business. During this time I literally worked and paid bills. I worked like a dog and paid bills.
