Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. Finding a new purpose for an old item is one of the joys of finding bargains at garage sales.

In spite of the expense, some of the newer furniture is much less well made than older pieces. Whether you are just starting out; wanting to freshen up your own older items; or furnishing a second home, furniture buying can make a big dent in your budget. Garage sale and thrift store furniture bargains abound.

We leave the nest – move out of Mom and Dad’s well stocked home. Some get stuff from stores, the less financially favored head for thrift stores, garage sales, Mom’s house or the trash pickup routes. We rent a shelter (usually), and it is bare! We struggle to get more stuff – without money it can be difficult.

Have you a well loved chair that needs a bit of TLC? Well, maybe so but then again, you might want to think twice about it. I own a condo at a local lake that came furnished. Two heavy wing back recliners were among the furnishings. Maybe it is just something you found at a sale that doesn’t quite match your decor.

Last week I visited a garage sale. This is a biggie while you are on vacation (you won’t get back this way, buy it now) or at a sale event (such as a garage sale or estate sale or auction). And furnish it with love. Reciprocity. Knowing that a deal won’t be available later is often an incentive to buy.

Even the kings and queens of prior days slept in very small beds, as evidenced by my memory of the furnishings displayed in the kings bedroom museum of Windsor Castle – barely wider than a twin bed and much shorter. We had an out house, a well and a coal stove. No basement, no garage, no bathroom. We moved when I was 7.
