Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. I look for the neighborhood sales, which are usually either in spring or fall.

Kids will naturally accumulate stuff, even when they can’t buy it. You want stuff. You are finally free.

I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. All those items got plenty of use as all three of my kids used them. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales.

I used to darn my family’s socks, but now don’t. Dad was a WWII generation kid who grew up on a farm in the Mid-west. At garage sales, are you attracted to those still usable but slightly defective items that no one else wants? Remember when high school kids were required to take shop and/or home economics?

Parents already know that back to school time is the second most expensive time of the year (right after the holidays). I love to shop garage sales. In our neighborhood folks buy really nice name brand clothing for their kids. I get great, nearly new stuff for my little grand-kids at next to nothing prices.
