My Best Garage Sale Finds

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. I love a bargain.

How Little Could You Spend on Your Child in a Year?

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

I had three baby showers when I was pregnant for my son–one from each side of the family and one from my co-workers. All those items got plenty of use as all three of my kids used them. Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales.

I’m guilty as well. I used to darn my family’s socks, but now don’t. Dad was a WWII generation kid who grew up on a farm in the Mid-west. At garage sales, are you attracted to those still usable but slightly defective items that no one else wants? Many of us throw the broken or outdated item out.

Just bare twigs in a large vase, with old ornaments tied to them can be pretty as well. We live on the edge of the prairie and prairie grasses grow well here. They kind of look like the ones for sale at Curious Country Creations. Plan ahead and hit garage sales, but especially estate sales.

Should You Learn To Sew?

Prairie Eco-Thrifter

Many seamstresses lived on the charity of family and friends in addition to their pay. In many parts of the US, people learned to sew as part of their life skills – from parents or family or schools. I believe that your opportunity cost would be too great as well. The pay was low to boot! Your opportunity cost is too great.

Meet a Reader | Jennifer from Arkansas

The Frugal Girl

Now I’m living on the small acreage that I was raised on (which is now smack dab in the middle of town & 2 miles from work) with my mom & my two kids, 15 & 8. We teamwork together to homeschool-I was homeschooled until nursing school, and I am privileged to be teaching my kids & have my mom assist on the days I work.
