Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead.

For small packages, find interesting magazine pages to use in wrapping. Use those as well. Shop garage sales and thrift stores and estate sales. Three years ago, I bought a bag of new holiday ribbons that would have cost me upwards of $50 if I had purchased them from a retail store.

I also occasionally get to encourage young entrepreneurs by purchasing their wares (usually soda or lemonade but sometimes more ambitions products as well). Type in ‘sewing’ into your search engine and you will get a tremendous number of results, all the way from companies selling sewing machines, patterns, and material, to blogs, class offerings, books, magazines, videos and events! I believe that your opportunity cost would be too great as well. Sewing takes time.

You can end up well ahead in the long run. Shop around at garage sales, thrift stores and online classifieds for furniture and other household items. Magazines and newspapers are all available online now. And if you rent, save money and then invest the difference. Cancel subscriptions. Do it yourself.
