Years ago, Mom introduced me to the idea of going to garage sales. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. If you are in more of a hurry, find a thrift store instead. My best finds.

Spending our precious and all too limited time searching online and in stores. Sometimes, as we shop we see things we would like to own and decide to treat ourselves with a gift or two as well. So, hey, I guess I can take the tax reduction next year as well as this! I know I do. In fact, I did today! All things Christmas.

A smile or a word from a parent or teacher, seeing someone enjoying their savings, a chance combination of a happy conversation, a sun shiny day and an increased amount in the piggy bank – all may result in one child’s brain being wired towards the pleasure of saving. As teenagers, we may be madly saving up for a car.

I also occasionally get to encourage young entrepreneurs by purchasing their wares (usually soda or lemonade but sometimes more ambitions products as well). Another benefit is that I am cutting the governments out of the loop – there no sales taxes on used stuff (except big things of course, like boats or cars).

I’m guilty as well. At garage sales, are you attracted to those still usable but slightly defective items that no one else wants? If so, the new fixer movement may be for you! What happens when your favorite pair of leather boots starts to lose it’s soul? Many of us throw the broken or outdated item out.

Many of the other items I needed like cloth diapers and clothes for the baby in bigger sizes I bought from garage sales.
