Apparently my excitement for canning was contagious, as I have received many emails over the last few months from Prairie EcoThrifter readers asking for information on canning equipment. I have found that garage sales , flea markets , estate sales or Mom/Grandma’s basement are the best places to score a great deal on used canning jars.

Contests are cheaper to enter now, all you have to do is give away some information – like your email id, and put up with some clutter in your email box (the item you just subscribed to). I’ve always loved going to sales – garage sales, estate sales, auctions, moving sales – no matter.

Visit your county offices to find information about zoning regulations as well as where and when the zoning committee meets. Garage sales make a good excuse to get into the area without it seeming weird or awkward. Ours is in a database called the Geographic Information System (GIS).

I pick up a lot of them at garage sales for 25 cents to a $1. Much of the information in it is basic personal finance guidance (with a biblical twist). I’m always on the look out for investment books I haven’t yet read. One I obtained in that manner is “The Sound Mind Investing Handbook” by Austin Pryor.
