My standard of living (and most other people’s as well) is much better now that we have all of the conveniences from the past 60 years available. riding lawn mowers, garage door openers and many, many more things we take for granted today. Most of us did not have air conditioned homes. There were no garage door openers.

That was true for me as well, but I also think that poverty is a very relative concept. Today a poor person in America probably has access to electricity, telephones, food, indoor plumbing, central heat and public transportation. They used the berries to make a purple die and painted their own and each others bodies with it!
