Kids could roam the neighborhood by themselves safely. On Christmas eve, gangs of kids caroled from house to house. Kids addressed adult neighbors as Mr or Mrs so and so, not by first name. Kids did chores and not all of them were ‘safe’ My brother mowed the lawn with a homemade electric lawnmower.
