We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids). Why are we spending more on our grandchildren? We want some influence over how our grandchildren are raised. They tolerated our presence.

Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. If you do decide to offer payment (or ask for it), there may be financial benefits for parents, grandparents and possibly the children as well.

Many well to do families have been counting on this as a way to pass along significant wealth to their next generations. First, if I had managed to convert everything to a Roth, the grandkids would be swamped with hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Your heirs will have to take all of that out within 5 years.

I found pleasure in thinking about giving our children and grandchildren the opportunity to see part of the world they might not otherwise see. We could well afford the cost with no foreseeable problem with our own finances now or at any time in the future.

The Grandkids are 9 and 12 now with lots of time before they have to start supporting themselves somehow. It felt like an important position and I found I had talents that extended to managing people and projects as well. At my Grandma Rie’s Money Camp this year, we started exploring the different careers that are out there.

Even the New York Times acknowledges that: As boomers join the ranks of grandparents, many are financing vacations for their children and grandchildren. My WWII era uncle and his wife made trips annually with one of their 4 grandchildren (a different one each year). We took my Mom with us to Florida in the 1980’s.
