We spoiled our children and we apparently are even more intent on doing so with our grandchildren! My parents were somewhat more interactive with their grandchildren (my kids). Why are we spending more on our grandchildren? We want some influence over how our grandchildren are raised. They tolerated our presence.

Take for instance, Clara Cannucciari, a 94 year old grandma and great grandma who shot to YouTube fame when her grandson began filming her sharing her experience living through the Great Depression as well as the recipes for the meals she and her family ate during that time. A simple video camera or recording device can be sufficient.
