Although I live 200+ miles away from my two grandkids, I try to get them for a week or so during the summer. There are many documented benefits to utilizing grandparents to watch grandkids. Parents may also be eligible for tax deductions or credits for child care services. The tax laws can be complex, and ever changing.

The money in the IRA can be used during your lifetime, but then can accumulate tax free while the next guy in line for it takes minimum distributions over his life. This is because the money is protected in the tax deferred (or tax free) account and it can build significantly over time. Roth IRA contributions are made post tax.

If we had put that quarter of a million dollars into a tax exempt bond fund at the time, it would have earned around 4% in yearly income, or around $8000 – every year for the past 10 years. If we hadn’t generated that gain, our taxes would have been lower. Our accountant charges a lot to do our taxes.

It is true that grandparents love to ‘spoil’ the grandkids (I know this because I am a grandparent). In Canada, parents can give unlimited, tax free amounts to anyone anytime. When my Mom died in 1996, her estate had to pay over $80,000 in estate taxes (which is around $126,000 in 2016 dollars).

If you keep your head and are persistent, you can find many things you want or need, all in near perfect condition, for a fraction of the cost with NO TAXES due. People sell the darnedest things at their garage sales. Garage sales take time, you have to hit quite a few before you find the item you want or need. Toys for the grand-kids.
