Use Up Existing Resources. Discontinue Insurance. Since she could no longer afford to pay it, she stopped the home insurance and stopped using the cars she inherited (also free and clear). She is on the low income payment plan for electricity and uses her Social Security check to pay that and the water bill.

Health insurance is a bit more pricy than when employed, but less than a lot of other people pay. We didn’t count on the psychological effect on me though. Now, however, I hear that the company will not consider re-hiring anyone laid off in the first round. It would have meant about a year’s worth of salary.
