Better late than never’ is a good approach to personal finance for the over 40s. Some people take on a second job to help fund their retirement; others do part-time work during retirement to keep some income coming in to augment their savings. Each year you delay, the benefit goes up about 8% up to age 70.

Before you get ready to shove those kids of yours out of the nest, here are what I consider to be (based on my experience as a person, a Mom, and a Grandma) the most important things you (or someone) should teach them about personal finance. Try for internships to get a feel for what the work is really like.

In the personal finance world, there’s a lot of discussion regarding “side hustles”, also known as extra income opportunities, side jobs, survival jobs, etc. You can only cut back on your expenses so much, but your earning potential is practically unlimited.

Even though I was helping my husband from home part-time with his business, I still felt like I wasn’t contributing to our finances and that drove me crazy. But chapter 17 helped me realize that I could contribute substantially to our finances–just in a different way. What does that person do in your home?

You will want to oversee their purchases, especially when it comes buy items online, but let them actively find ways to stretch their allowance or part-time wages by purchasing things used, such as clothes, books, furniture, and even bikes and cars. And vice versa!) Stress the importance of saving and staying away from debt.

I work full time in IT and my wife works part time in retail. After trying to extend credit to finance the vacation and we were denied (best thing to ever happen to us) we realized we made too much money to be living like this and something had to change. We live in New York. We are a close family that likes to laugh.
