I received a quick response that they would reimburse us for the unused tickets from Philly to Harrisburg, which equaled $400 and more than covered the rental car. While they would not reimburse us for the rental car, they also gave each of us a $50 credit to be used within a year. The money hit our account in April.

Use discounts on rental cars. We rented an SUV for our last vacation because our car is getting very old and the route was fairly desolate. As much as possible, we try to stay at the same hotel chain so we can accrue rewards points. Other times I’ve brought along a small slow cooker or an electric skillet.

Our points add up quickly and can be rolled into free nights! Another cost to factor into flying is whether or not you’ll need a rental car when you arrive at your destination. This can be a considerable expense, bringing me to my next point. Never get insurance through the rental car company if you rent a car.

Of course I signed up with each airline and hotel for points. One year, my spouse and I went to Park City, Utah and stayed in the Marriott – nestled right up to the mountains – free courtesy of our points. Employee pricing on new cars. Rental car discounts. Half price symphony tickets.

I order office supplies, tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, etc… Some of these companies offer as much as 5-10% cash back, which is a sweet chunk of change. I regularly have cash back deposits of anywhere from $2 to $10…in FREE money! It adds up very quick!
