Sometimes parents will offer temporary funding to tide the family over in times of unusual circumstances (such as job losses or extreme medical expenses, etc). When my Mom died in 1996, her estate had to pay over $80,000 in estate taxes (which is around $126,000 in 2016 dollars). It is, after all, their money.
