I sent it to our neighborhood paper, East Side Monthly , and the owner published it. My first essay for East Side Monthly was published in November 2007, and my last one appeared in July 2018. Turns out Zak was a no-show, but that didn’t deter the headstrong 7-year-old. It was about Olive, a black lab we took care of for a neighbor.

At the time we were renting an office space in a strip mall, but when we discovered a foreclosure in our town that seemed like a great idea on paper, we jumped at the chance. We have gone back and forth about moving up into a larger home, but at this point, it might not make sense. Projected pay off date December 2018.
