My WWII era uncle and his wife made trips annually with one of their 4 grandchildren (a different one each year). For our 2012 trip (which we took in June), I started the fall before. Another time, my spouse and I took a Yellow Bus tour – sans kids or grandkids. Start planning early. Start early. Plan to handle all ages.
