It’s been a long haul for our entire family, and we eagerly looked forward to the day when we could leave Chicago and move closer to family and friends in Michigan. After all, I have many aunts and uncles who winter in Florida, so I would have family nearby and my mom could come to visit to escape the Michigan cold.

I cut down a small cedar tree (which grow like weeds on our 6 acres) each year, put it in a tree stand on the porch and put white twinkle lights on it. For family dinners, have everyone bring a dish, or better yet, do a traveling dinner. In my growing up family, we didn’t get that many presents on Christmas day.

My Aunt and Uncle used to take each of their grandchildren on a trip when they reached the ripe old age of 8. You can ask them to not sit on the table, not jump on the couch or to turn off the lights when they leave a room… your house… different rules. That first grandchild is so exciting. Your kid is having a kid!
