I went on buying trips to New York for the fancy ladies wear shop run by one aunt (they used to model the dresses at high end shops), learned the uniform business from another aunt, and was taught the basics of the Borscht Belt hospitality business by a great cousin. After dinner, Dad went off to Schul with his brothers.

Just look at the many people scouring garage sales in the summer. The most famous large family, the Duggars, routinely buy as much as they can used. After all, it’s already been used by another family. Blender Fifteen years ago, I bought a blender at a garage sale for $3. I saved hundreds of dollars this way.

But, we also need stuff for emotional support – stuff to remind us that we are part of a generations old family, that we have accomplished significant tasks, seen impressive places and conquered difficult situations. But, they have to get rid of some stuff to make room for the stuff they inherit from family.

I also love to visit family (all our family is between 2 and 4 hours away) and friends, bake, and play board games. My dad taught my mom how to drive manual, my uncle taught my aunt, my fiancé even taught his ex how to drive manual. So, I lost $2k on the sale and ended up with a more expensive car in the long run.
