My standard of living (and most other people’s as well) is much better now that we have all of the conveniences from the past 60 years available. The average home size in America was around 1100 square feet. Most of us did not have air conditioned homes. Working from home usually meant selling stuff door to door.

Needs vs. Wants

Home offices. Yes more folks work from home these days and the tax laws encourage setting aside a space to dedicate to a home office. Even though most families cooked and ate at home back then, kitchens were pretty basic. Heck, I used to go to the Y and work out over lunch. 200+ TV channels.
