Alternatives to fossil fuel are becoming more popular not only because of their “green” benefits, but also because of concerns about relying on limited, imported resources to fuel cars – and economies. Biofuel and electricity, including hybrid-electric cars, have emerged as top alternatives to fossil fuel.

However, buying a new car isn’t in the cards for me right now, so I have to make due with the one I have. Automobiles cause 51 percent of the carbon monoxide pollution in the air, so it’s important to do what we can to make our cars a little less dirty whenever possible. Shut the car off. Buy fuel-efficient tires.

Despite all of those tangibles, fuel economy is still only an estimate. And, in 2012 alone, both Kia and Hyundai were found guilty of misstating their vehicles’ fuel efficiency by up to 15 percent , while a California woman was awarded nearly $10,000 when she sued Honda in small claims court for overstated mpg claims.

You can pick up a good used bike for under $100 and stop paying for gasoline and emitting noxious gases. Doing so eliminates car payments, insurance bills, and maintenance costs.

Before You Get In Your Car. You don’t need extra equipment or “stuff” in your car that just weighs it down, and ultimately burns more gasoline. Just like you are spring cleaning in your home, make sure you do the same with your car to get out anything that is not necessary. Don’t leave your car idling.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening… your gallon is not exactly a gallon. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine.
