Stores like Sears and JC Penney sent out free merchandise catalogs 3 inches thick and people ordered their stuff from those if they couldn’t find it in a store. Gasoline stations did not serve food, have coffee or provide bath rooms. People went downtown to do their big shopping. There were no shopping malls.
