School started after Labor Day and ended after Memorial Day. The only discount store was the 5 and dime aka ‘the dime store’ It did not sell food (except 1 penny candies). Heck, there were barely chain guards! There were lots of kids to play with (we were the baby boom after all). Kids walked to school.
