School started after Labor Day and ended after Memorial Day. People cooked and ate at home. Cheap (not just inexpensive, I mean cheap – easy to break) toys came from post-war Japan. They used aprons over them when they cooked. Heck, there were barely chain guards! Kids walked to school.
